Community Outreach

My name is Maria Lara, I am originally from Mexico. I now live in Rifle, Colorado, and have four children. My youngest was a participant in the Raising a Reader Program. I have been working at Highland Elementary School since 2008. While working at HES a staff member of the RAR program asked me to consider joining the program. I started with Raising a Reader in 2011 and since then it has been a privilege for me to be part of a fantastic program. I started distributing “Bolsitas Rojas” at Rifle St. Mary’s church. Then we moved to the Public Library and we continued there. It has been a wonderful experience to be able to see and share the joy of the little ones and their families in the program with the stories we read, the songs we sing and the games we play. For me, babies are the most tender, innocent and beautiful beings on earth. I love spending time enjoying the innocence and sincerity of the little ones when they are read to and when they learn something new.
