Success begins at home with a parent, a child and a book.

Raising A Reader Aspen to Parachute engages parents and children—newborn to five years old—in a routine of daily book sharing to foster brain development, parent-child bonding, and critical early literacy skills.

Our goal is to provide families with storybooks and parental guidance to build family bonds and encourage abundant positive conversations to set children on the path to school and life success.

Key programs reach 1,600 children and their parents.

  • Core Program - Red Book Bags: 4 books sent home every week through preschool & kindergarten classrooms.

  • Guidance for Parents: Discussion groups, instructional videos and e-newletters provide guidance for busy parents.

  • Bolsitas Rojas/Little Red Bag Club: Neighborhood outreach with weekly sessions and book bags for parents and children not enrolled in preschool.

  • Blue Bag Library Days - Library Introduction: Special library field trips for preschool children.

  • Moms' Groups: Support group for moms.

2017-2018 Evaluation

Length of read-aloud sessions increased by 30% for low-income families

While reading to their children, the number of parents who took time to ask questions or encourage discussion increased by 29%

37% increase in the number of times the child wanted to "read" or make up their own story based on a book’s pictures.

Over two consecutive years, the number of Raising A Reader children testing at or above the national standard for reading readiness exceeded the number of non-RAR children by seven percentage points (Garfield Re2 School District).
